Carving the 132' 6" Totem in
1969.
Since its inception in 1957, Alaska Indian Arts, Inc.
artists have carved more than 70 large totems ranging in size
from 5 feet to 132 feet in height. They are now located in the
United States, Japan, China, Korea, Canada, Germany, and South
America. Over the years younger artists have worked cooperatively
with the older master carvers to develop their craft. The four
carvers currently working at Alaska Indian Arts, Inc. have been
working together for 30 years.

Alaska Indian Arts produces large totems by
special order. The totems are carved from a red cedar log using
traditional style carving tools and painted in traditional colors.
We will send sample photos of totems featuring the main clans
of Raven and Eagle and respective sub-clans such as Sockeye,
Wolf, Frog etc. A customer chooses what theme or clans they would
like on their totem. This is often influenced by a desire to
represent family members, a story, or a special event. A drawing
is then made and sent for approval. Once a design has been agreed
on carving begins. |
